Educational goals
The main goal of the Master is to train professionals in the design, fabrication and characterization of Nano and Micro systems for different applications, such as sensors and actuators, photonics, BioMEMS, with high scientific and industrial impact.
Students could find an occupation in the following areas: microelectronics, sensoristics, domotics, health, bio medics, ICT companies, high tech, nanotechnologies, renewable energies and manufacturers in the craft sector
Specializations
The Master will offer an educational portfolio that includes two thematic areas:
- Nano and Micro systems for the biomedical devises and environmental monitoring
- Nano e Micro systems for renewable energies and photonics
Language
All courses are taught in English.
Educational Activities
The Master course is divided into five periods.
The first period (1 study module) offers basic knowledge on the NEMS- MEMS topics.
During the second period (2 study modules) different cross subjects such as Security, Advanced Informatics, Team Management will be taught. These topics are intended to complement the technological courses for a more complete preparation of the students.
The following business and law aspects will be presented and discussed in details: technological transfer, intellectual property, patents regulation for start up and spin off companies. These subjects help students to understand better the business world.
The Master study plan foresees also the organization of lab courses on LabVIEW, Ansys, L-Edit, Inventor, soft frequently used in company research units.
During the third period (1 study module to choose between 2 thematic areas) students will have the chance to attend courses associated to a specific thematic area such as:
- Nano and Micro systems for the biomedical devises and environmental monitoring
- Nano e Micro systems for renewable energies and photonics
These areas are focused on the biotechnological applications (Bio NEMS – MEMS), environmental monitoring and renewable energies, or on the NEMS-MEMS like innovative applicable sensors and actuators for industry and telecommunications.
During the fourth period (1 study module) students will carry out a 400 hours stage in selected high-tech companies mainly on the territory, interested in short term specific projects in the MEMS-NEMS field.
The fifth period (2 modules) foresees individual classes. During this students could rediscuss some topics they missed in the previous periods, delve into the arguments they are interested in, have support for the Master thesis or exam preparation.
Examinations
An examination will be held by the students at the end of each study period.
Students will present the results of their stage in a Master thesis which will be defended during a final exam ("Master thesis presentation").
Academic Calendar
The Master takes just 11 months to complete. The classes of the a.y. 2010/2011 begin on February 14, 2011.
